What headless means on Shopify

Headless means your storefront is a separate app that talks to Shopify through the Storefront API. Checkout stays on Shopify either way. On October 14, 2026, Shopify made the new Hydrogen generally available as a framework-agnostic JavaScript library, with starters for React Router and Next.js. Existing Hydrogen storefronts keep working, and Oxygen hosting remains free.

A Liquid theme is still the right default for most DTC brands. Headless pays off when you have a real reason: content-heavy experiences, an existing JavaScript app, multiple front ends, or a dedicated engineering team.

Making the call

  • When headless is worth it

Content-heavy experiences, an existing JavaScript app, several front ends or an in-house engineering team.

  • When a theme is better

A small team, a standard catalog, and a need to move fast in the theme editor.

  • Hidden costs

Development, a CMS, ongoing engineering and SEO work a theme would handle for you.

How I approach a headless project

Decision first, build second

  1. Make the case

Write down what a theme can't do for you, and what headless will cost to build and run.

  2. Architecture plan

Framework, CMS, hosting, which parts stay on Shopify, and who maintains the code.

  3. Build

A storefront on the Storefront API and Hydrogen, with checkout on Shopify.

  4. SEO and speed

Metadata, structured data, redirects and Core Web Vitals handled in the build, since no theme does it for you.

How to work together

Headless builds are scoped as a Store Architecture & Build.

FAQ

Common questions

Is Shopify Hydrogen free?

Hydrogen is an open-source library, and Shopify says Oxygen hosting remains free. The real costs are development, a CMS and ongoing engineering.

Does headless improve SEO?

Not automatically. A fast, well-built headless site can perform well, but you take on SEO work a theme handles for you.

Can I use Next.js with Shopify?

Yes. Hydrogen 2026-10 works with any JavaScript framework, and Shopify points to Vercel Shop as the Next.js starter.
