Where checkout customization stands now
checkout.liquid is unsupported for the information, shipping and payment steps and was sunset for the Thank you and Order status pages on August 28, 2025. Non-Plus stores had until August 26, 2026 to upgrade those pages. Shopify Scripts were deactivated on June 30, 2026.
The replacement is a set of app-based tools. Upgrading replaced existing customizations, so stores that clicked the button without rebuilding are often missing tracking, upsells or custom fields.
The four tools that replaced checkout.liquid
Checkout UI extensions
Custom fields, banners, upsells and delivery instructions. On the information, shipping and payment steps, Plus-only.
Shopify Functions
Discounts, delivery and payment rules and cart validation, the logic Scripts used to handle.
Web pixels
Tracking that used to live in additional scripts, now in Settings > Customer events.
Branding
Colors, fonts, logos and styling in the checkout editor or the branding API.

Shopify's customizations report, old scripts, your tag manager and theme history.
Sort into four buckets
Native now, app block, pixel or custom build. Native items get deleted, not rebuilt.
Tracking first, then revenue
Rebuild app pixels and test purchases end to end before upsells and post-purchase offers.
Test like a customer
Mobile and desktop, Shop Pay and guest checkout, discount codes, each market and B2B buyers.

Can I add custom fields to checkout without Plus?
Not in the information, shipping or payment steps. You can collect information on the Thank you page with an app block, or use cart attributes on the cart page before checkout.
Is checkout.liquid still supported anywhere?
No. It's unsupported for the information, shipping and payment steps and was sunset for the Thank you and Order status pages on August 28, 2025.
Where does Google Analytics and Meta tracking go now?
Each platform's official Shopify app installs an app pixel. Consent and custom pixels are managed in Settings > Customer events.
Do I need a developer for checkout extensibility?
Not for branding, app blocks or official app pixels. You need one for custom UI extensions, custom pixels and custom Functions.
